Employee Wellness Initiatives

Campus Wellness Committee

Rebecca Murphy & Kyle Culpepper

80 Cumulative Hours

Overview:

Campus Wellness and the EOD co-sponsored many wellness initiatives together. As an office GA and the marketing GA, I was responsible for assisting in the larger wellness events and creating press releases to be dispersed across campus. I have detailed my involvement below:

Relay for Life:

Every year, the EOD office participates in the VSU Relay for Life event.  Typically, the Relay team consisted of the HR department, the EOD department, and the VSU Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). VSU SHRM ventured out on their own for the 2015 Relay for Life. The EOD team successfully raised several thousand dollars using a variety of methods. Below is a list of some of methods used to raise funds for the American Cancer Society:

  • Change Wars (departments across campus kept large plastic jars in their offices, the office with the most donations won a prize from the EOD department);
  • Team T-shirt Sales (one of our team members volunteered to design a t-shirt incorporating our team name/theme with the theme of the event: superheroes (EOD raised funds via the Poker Walk and pictures with the Flash);
  • Eliciting donations from friends, family, and local business owners.

Walking Club Spring Challenge:

Each spring semester, Campus Wellness facilitates a walking club competition that is open to all VSU faculty, staff, and students.  Each competitor is provided a pedometer and is given the entire semester to gather points according to steps taken while walking, jogging, or running. The EOD office coordinated the tracking of points with the assistance of the Walking Club, as well as hosted an ending celebration for all participants. For the 2015 Challenge, Lorena Afa, Korea Black, and I were assigned to coordinate decorations, refreshments, prizes, organizing the order of the event, and running the event itself.

My involvement with the 2016 Challenge was strictly limited to press releases and contacting potential sponsors. I have included some of the advertisements below:

Newsletters:

As the marketing GA, I was responsible for communicating to the University via wellness newsletters. The newsletters were used to communicate to participants wellness related community events and summaries of news stories and articles pertaining to maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle. Screen shots of the published newsletters and wellness initiatives are available below:

Survey Development:

I volunteered to work with a few Campus Wellness initiatives and projects. One of which was the improvement of community-wide wellness events. I worked closely with Kyle Culpepper and Benjamin Weil develop, edit, and disperse the 2016 Blazer Dash assessment. This survey was designed to measure satisfaction with current wellness initiatives (such as Blazer Dash) and polled the University community to assess the need for some other form of wellness initiative (i.e., cycling events, half-marathons, etcetera). With my assistance, Campus Wellness received over 300 responses within the first three hours of the survey being dispersed. The data gathered served in the upcoming improvement of the 2016-2017 Campus Wellness initiatives.

Application:

Being so involved with the wellness initiatives has given me the opportunity to see how beneficial employee wellness is for organizations. The skills and knowledge I gained will assist me in my future career as I will be able to bring wellness initiatives to the forefront. The ability I have to market these initiatives ensures that any wellness initiatives implemented in the future will be more likely to see success.
